10 Easy Ways to Become a Better Musician

  1. Read biographies of/or interviews with some of your favorite music artists. Some of what they have to share is sure to inspire.
  2. Practice EVERY day. Plan on it. Go for no less than sixty full minutes of practice time. The pros do much more.
  3. Listen to music as often as possible. Sign-up for a free Spotify account and begin the immersion process by creating/sharing playlists, listening to stations, and ‘starring’ new tunes that catch the ear.
  4. Study music theory. There are lots of free resources to get you started, here’s just one: Music Theory Lessons
  5. Attend lots of live performances. Not everyone can afford a front row seat at The Village Vanguard or Lincoln Center however chances are there is talent playing on the cheap for locally sponsored events. One of the best blues solos that I ever heard was played at a dive bar in Newport Beach, CA.
  6. Keep a journal of your practicing and performances writing down what you performed or practiced. Keep reminders of things that went well and create plans for future rehearsal and improvement.
  7. Acquire a metronome and a tuner.
  8. Go for a walk, play basketball, golf, jog, bike, or hike. Exercise can really help improve physical stamina and mental health, both are prerequisites for solid musicianship (and longevity!).
  9. Take some dance lessons! Find a partner and Dosado, Lindy Hop, Salsa, or Swing your way to excellent timing and precise rhythm.
  10. Join a civic orchestra, community band or choir. Getting out and rehearsing with others is a terrific way to learn as well as socialize with those who share similar interests.
