Why I use “The Buzzing Book” by James Thompson

If you are not familiar with the trumpet playing of Dr. James Thompson (the author of “The Buzzing Book“) then you are missing out on some fine musicianship. He is a terrific soloist and a master trumpet educator (Eastman School of Music). His buzzing method for the trumpet is an astounding routine that is sure to create stronger habits for any player. I have used the method extensively (as much as every day for two or three years at a time) in order to prepare for recitals and long tours.

Impressive right?

What is buzzing?

Buzzing is the act of playing the trumpet or other brass instrument mouthpiece without the instrument attached. This technique has been known for centuries to be a helpful warm up aide but Dr. Thompson takes buzzing to a whole new level for tone enhancement, range extension, and endurance factors. Thompson’s buzzing method has been utilized by top professionals from all over the world.

Should I use James Thompson’s Buzzing Book?

If you are a serious trumpet player who has committed to practice each and everyday, then you should own a copy of James Thompson’s Buzzing Book (Complete Method). It includes both Dr. Thompson’s “Buzzing Basics Volume 1” and “Volume 2“, originally released in separate publications. The play-along tracks were created with voicing intended to aid in proper intonation (a critical struggle for every trumpeter)!

How will buzzing change my trumpet playing?

After a week or two of practicing from The Buzzing Book, you will feel that you have more flexibility, higher range, and stronger endurance. I personally find that focusing on the buzzing exercises that Thompson prescribes help me to play more in tune and with more efficiency. Mouthpiece buzzing feels great on the face and the lips tingle when it is time to take a break.
